Session 008 - Space Jam Cryo Bros

Alternity 5/30/2015 -

We left off last time with The Adventurers, In A Bar, after introducing Victoria. There was a signal, some kind of transmission from somewhere in the nearby asteroid ring.

Calliope is frozen rather than recycled, Miquiztli can her her screaming, and she told Faust that Bryan Johnson is hiding her (and other things?) from us.

What to do with Faust since Justin isn’t able to play any more at this time?

We’re making a b-team as an opposing kind of character to our mains.

Those left behind: Herman, Evka, Bryan.

Councilwoman Sorinova, and all of the other of the selected 7 council members, are being awoken. Dr Bryan Johnson is there to attend to her. He doesn’t fill her in on anything.

Herman was awakened sooner than others to prepare more food in Hydroponics, at the same time as all the extra security.

Dr Bryan Johnson also wakes up Cashmere Koch. Has a few activation questions/tests as she is a Psionic. She asks “is the ship gone” and some other nonsense sounding questions, “when is now”, is really sluggish, late 40s. Absolutely on the list of psionics.

Over in Hydroponics, Herman has had TIME to study and study. Is a serious scientist, even while “extremely chill.” Was a post-graduate research assistant, has a few dozen hydroponics patents. Was friends with Cass McCabe as another research assistant.

Going back in time a bit: Cass is still alive. She has been moved to Herman’s chillzone den. Cass has not yet broken in the den-box. Herman is a few days from getting off bedrest. Herman knows that the former captain is dead & that there was an explosion, and that the Incident in Engineering has been addressed.

Before they leave for the asteroid field mission:
Keyes comes to see Herman on business, Herman’s happy to see her but Keyes is asking about the bulb and why he was cultivating it, it was genuinely just to get high but he was also doing experiments on it, had no idea Cass was using the plant to poison people. Keyes shows him the plant, he asks her to put it in a plastic bag with a little water, she says she’ll watch it for a little while. Keyes touches Herman on the shoulder and says bye, but in that moment they both see from each other’s perspective, makes them both puke, Keyes says she’ll check on him in a few days as Bryan Johnson comes in, asks hey are you ok, what’s happening.

Herman pings Keyes and she comes down to Med to talk. Herman tells her that he wants to preserve the plant for medical purposes, Keyes brings him over to Faust’s still of gin, and they talk, then Herman puts the moves on. During This, Keyes has a flashback of being covered in and puking the purple goo. There’s someone who was standing over her, trying to grapple her, she becomes deadweight & gets out of it.

Vision
Comes to, covered in purple goo. Person has hold on her hair and is “talking” to her, and she hears the click of a pen. She feels vomit coming up and spits goo on the person’s leg. As the person hauls her up by her hair, she goes “dead weight” and knocks them off-kilter, but they recover and start hauling her down a hallway, saying, “It’s your turn.”

She is hauled into a room, she recognizes an open cryopod, but inside there is blue goo instead of purple. Keys has a flash of insight, noting that the person hauling her along the floor is responding to her feelings, not her words. She pulls up an image from her past, from a military operation where The Jaguars were under open fire and trying to extract themselves from an aborted mission. She projects that image into the person’s brain, and the other’s hand releases her hair and pushes her away in reaction.

Keys rolls away with the momentum of the push, coming against a bank of machinery. Still without the ability to see clearly, she searches for a nearby hiding space. Determining that the best course of action would actually be to go over the bank of machinery behind her, she hauls herself up and over… only to come face to face with a “sleeping” Ghazan Spencer, inside his own blue-goo pod.

At that point, the face of Spencer melts into the face of Herman and she rolls away from him.

She comes back to it, rolls away from smooch-forward Herman, wigs out a little, and Herman goes to get her some water and some space. She brings him back to Med and says good night and leaves.

Herman remembers he has a bunch of buds in his secret Den.

Session 006 - END CHAPTER ONE

Concluding the first chapter of the game…

First, some NOTES:
- Keyes knows of a shipping crate in Raw Matter, with a pressure seal, where someone from another crew set up their own private break room, table and chairs and cards, etc. It’s off the grid, unknown to anyone but Keyes and presumably the other person who’s been using it.
- When someone on the ship dies, we have a ceremony, then their body is sent to recycling in Hydroponics

Picking up from last time:
- Marlana has been promoted to Acting Chief of Engineering while all those above her are out of commission or dead, a position she doesn’t actually want. She takes off to attend to VERY IMPORTANT DUTIES (hull inspection following major G-Pressures, continued repair on the lift, getting ALL systems back on line, repairing computer virus damage, etc). She’ll be on this for the rest of the month, as more Engineers get thawed and brought online.
- They freeze Calliope in a cryo tube. Pretty much everyone is on board with this immediate decision.
- Keyes prepared for the interrogation of Cass McCabe. She accrued quite a mass of evidence, and planned out her strategy.
- We ran it as a three-stage conflict, and Faust assisted with bonus rolls.
- Keyes pretty much knocked it out of the park! Cass initially played confused, then in the end turned psycho violent. It actually seemed quite out of character…
- Cass screamed things like “She is coming and we’re all doomed, doom we deserve!” and other apocalyptic babble.
- Johnson had a secret debriefing with the other new captain, Eva Iltchenko, currently thought to be Molly Jackson. He explained the situation to her while she was conscious.
- Habib was assigned the honor of attending the actual new captain, Rafaela Cordova. She is making progress quite rapidly, already moving around via wheelchair.
- Faust set to work also calculating how to correct the ship’s course. Turns out his suspicions were spot on: Calliope set them on a hard course for the system’s sun!
- After a lot of calculations, Faust was able to figure out a way to correct the course, and only add 37 hours to the arrival time! They’d have to skip the sequence 9 and 10 planets entirely, however, missing out on valuable research opportunities. He commits the plan, and consults with navigation to get things in order.
- Faust and Keyes had a night of drinking and chatting, and it was fairly emotional. Faust got a blood sample from Keyes!
- Cass McCabe is sentenced to death by Captain Cordova, on charges of endangering the life of everyone on board the ship, potentially wiping out humanity as we know it.
- Faust and Keyes arrange to kidnap her instead, taking her to the hidden spot in Raw Matter (yay for Chekov’s Gun!). In her place, one of the casualties from the earlier gravity shift crisis is sent to recyclying, with a hacked biodata tag.
- Johnson hacked her biodata-tag to report something else entirely, so he could track her movements in and out of Raw Matter

We end this Chapter with the following notes:
- The next session will start with a one-month jump in time.
- Cass is currently being secretly held in Raw matter, a fact known only to Keyes, Johnson, and Faust.
- Everyone has acquired 13 XP (this makes them level 3). Note that Tech Op characters get one extra Skill Point with each new level, effectively giving them 15 skill points for advancements.
- Next up: we need to design the short range ship! =)

Some goofs!
- We mentioned that no word was made of Calliope by the new captain. That was because I didn’t think of it at the time. But yes, Calliope Bennet would also be sentenced to death for her role in the Crisis. It’s impossible to actually pin the murder of the Captain on her, though, without establishing proof of her brain-melting ability (something so far without scientific basis in understanding).
- This also means that Bryan Johnson is going to be given orders from his “shadow boss” to prevent Calliope’s death somehow. The new Captain wants her dead, given lethal drugs while in Cryo. The Shadow Boss wants her kept alive in Cryo, for further studying. Conflict!!

Session 005 - Concluding the Manhunt

March 29th, 2015 – RK

last time:
- Bryan Johnson had an attempt on his life, detected the poison as he
sipped from his morning coffee, he’s an android of course, so couldn’t
be poisoned
- During autopsy, revealed that Captain’s head was grabbed and his
head and brain were melted, then his body sliced and diced by a
microfilament knife.
- Bryan Johnson swapped two pods in order to bring another Captain out
from the thaw soon.
- Attempt on Felix’s life, in the science lab, power was cut, gas
released, Felix took care of him
- While Keyes & Marlana were working out and discussing the Captain’s
murder, Ghazan came in to chew Keyes out for not going to Medical,
and then collapsed after ignoring his mom, Marlana, and then fell into a coma.
- every level is on lockdown after Ghazan’s murder, the team
is on the lookout for The Symbol that Keyes identified (tattooed on
Felix’s attacker [Lars Einhildur, member of Eng. team]).

- Bryan identified the hand-print of the person who melted the Captain’s
brain, but he can’t remember, v strange since he’s a friggin’ robot
- Keyes, about half a day ago, started a massive relational query on
information regarding suicide bomber/captain killer/engineer attempted-
murderer-of-Felix. Learned a name: Calliope Bennett, learned as we all
walk in to Cryo for the interrogation:
- now it’s time to interrogate the entirety of the thawed crew!

3 – get down to engineering

1-medical/cryo
in Cryo, Calliope’s name comes up, who is down in Engineering. Bryan
leads the group into Cass McCabe (head of cryo)‘s office.
- Keyes gets a precognition moment!! In an office, very cold, managing
shifts, "these seven people should be moved to this shift, and these
other people should be moved over here, we’re all going to die anyway,"
then N rolled very well and was able to learn three details of the room:
1-date and time – 9 days ago
2-look at own hands, distinguishing features, wedding ring
3-up to three names – one is Calliope, orchestrator
- still in vision: is in a lab, reaching into purple goo, rolls up
sleeve of white lab coat, grabs bulb of some kind, puts it in a plastic
bag, closes it, puts it in her pocket
- Back to regular! Everyone in Cass McCabe’s office. Cass has a
wedding ring, like in Keyes’ vision, and is also wearing a lab coat.
- We manage to convince Cass she needs to submit to a blood test,
since Felix is such a chahmah
- Keyes calls Marlana over while Felix & Bryan distract/talk to Cass,
Marlana hacks the system & finds about a dozen files relating to
“special circumstances,” and sends it on to both Keyes & Marlana.
One name is Keyes’, Marlana & Keyes share a glance.
- Cass offers Felix a tour, he agrees after the kerfufflin’
- Keyes asks to be taken to empty-pod-zone, active, unoccupied pods,
looking for the pod in which the bulb was having
- We find the pod housing all the poison bulbs being grown with a faked
display. Bryan hacks the pod and gets a real visual view, sets an
alarm to alert him when the pod is opened.
- Marlana tries to seal Cass in the office on the way out, didn’t work.
- Keyes tries it too, fails spectacularly, loses her automated
security clearance.
- Team told to head down to Engineering, plans on doing so, thus skipping
command.
- Bryan walks back into Cryo. Keyes plans to arrest Bryan for obstruction
of justice. BRYAN STUNS CASS!
- Gravity gives out. This shouldn’t happen. Marlana’s fine with zero-g,
everyone else is a little less so. Marlana goes to get mag-boots for
Felix & Keyes.
- Felix tries to get her out of the chair, fails to do so, so he straps
her in the chair. He removes all McCabe’s security/medical access.
- Keyes gets all wiggly and weird about McCabe, hears the screaming of
the captain, and Bryan checks her for The Symbol as a tattoo, not
present.

- Decide to take the central shaft. Everybody suits up even though
there is atmosphere, just to be safe.
- Keyes gets down to where the elevator blockage is. Lucy Belcour is
there, dead, with all the tools she was using to free the blockage.
- Gravity shifts and everyone but Felix gets slammed into the wall.
- Group leaves the shaft as the gravity continues to shift. It is
evident that the acceleration is picking up. We head down the access
shaft and suit up to do so.
- At the bottom of raw matter, the marching order is Keyes, Marlana,
Felix, and Bryan picks up the rear. Carefully going through door
by door.
- Keyes asks if there’s any other area to get secretly through Eng.
Marlana says there is, it’s where the carbon matter compilers are,
typically really hot, but dead-cold right now.
- We approach the security and central engineering command station.
- The door creaks as it opens, a blast lands just to the right of Keyes’
head, Keyes dives behind a panel, and Marlana runs in and hits the
woman in the center (probably Calliope) for a really good whallop.
- Calliope appears to be three people all psi-crazy, Bryan sees that
it’s just one person, moving astronomically fast.
- Marlana subdues Calliope totally, after she shoots Midgley point-blank
in the head.
- Marlana gets acceleration back down/off, comm back on-line, then
sends a sitrep to command, “midgley down but not dead, perpetrator
subdued, acceleration back off, we are working on the remaining Eng
systems, awaiting orders”
- Keyes assembles list of those woken outside of schedule.
- Keyes’ data has been removed from her file.
- Marlana has received a “field promotion” due to her high rank &
Midgley’s unconsciousness. Marlana & Faust are tasked with fixing
it all.
- Keyes calls Caroline Perez, head of security, down to cryo, where
she shows her the pod full of the poison organic bulbs, and then puts
the dots together versus Cass and Calliope.

Session 001-???: You're All That's Left of Us...
Arrival and First Thaw

Note: The majority of the first “play” session ended up being a second session of story jamming, so I’ve included all of that information in the prior post. This post and all that follow will focus almost entirely on chronicling the story as it unfolds through play.

Explosion!

solar time: 05:12:27:05 since the Last Transmission

We open with Miquiztli, shivering violently on the cold, dark metal floor of a cryo bay, splashed over with the same purple goo that she can’t stop vomiting in near-solid chunks. “This isn’t how it’s supposed to happen,” she knows, but can’t act for the intense, crippling cold that the thin medical cryo-jammies utterly fail to mitigate. She tries to direct her vomit towards what she immediately chooses to be her first Enemy of the Day: a pair of perfectly-polished black boots standing nearby. Predicting her act of aggression, one of the boots pushes her, forcibly rolling her to her back. She only succeeds in ejecting more of the goo all over herself. She tries to scramble up, but never gets the chance as the horrible clicking begins oh dear gods or whatever is kind make it stop fucking make it stop. The owner of the boots leans down over her and begins speaking, but the words fade out and are replaced by blasting klaxons, the purple glow of cryo fluid replaced with the bright red of emergency.

The horrible memory dissipates and she comes to her senses, her head throbbing with pain as the piercing drones of the alarms echo throughout. She is in the ruins of a floor-to-floor intra-deck lift, laying like a blanket over the unconscious form of Dr. Felix Faust, and wondering why none of the jagged and broken debris covering them pierced either of their bodies. There is an unholy amount of blood over every visible surface, but none of it theirs. That mess of disconnected viscera would be the former bomber…

…oh shit, there was a bomb! She remembers stepping onto the lift with Dr. Faust, chatting idly about something inconsequential, and then a third passenger stepping aboard immediately before the doors sealed. The passenger had turned to them with an intense look of hatred, screamed “Disaster!” and then slammed his chest hard. Everything then went first a deafening bright white and then an immediate blackness of nothing.

A groan of discomfort beneath her lets her know Faust is alive and awake. Well that’s at least one disaster averted. She’s still not sure how they survived such a close-proximity pulse explosion, but she remembers an intense desire to not die, and an unconscious tug on whatever the hell those weird new waves she’s been seeing happen to be. The almost paralyzing headache is probably a result of this, but she can’t let it hinder her, for both her sake and for Faust’s. She needs to survive, needs to live, and needs to get out of this blasted cramped ruin of a lift—

—and then she’s out, on top of its groaning structure, looking up through the shaft of the ship’s lift and reeling at left another sudden wave of headache, again wondering what the fuck did I just do?

Felix blinks, equally confused at the security agent’s complete vanishing. One moment she was laying on top of him, having apparently been taken with a sudden valorous inspiration to shield him from their assailant. The next, gone, and then quickly after calling back in from… wait, how did she get on top of this wreck? He looks for some way to access the ruined lift’s com-projector node, but finds it to be completely trashed due to the bomber’s unfortunate prior position of standing immediately in front of it at his chosen moment of final action. Damn. Making matters worse, the repulsors that hold the lift in transitory stasis are now clashing with the ship’s a-grav, creating an increasingly unpleasant pressure along parts of his body. The lift itself seems to be compressing in on itself, even. Danger!

Two floors up, a set of sealed lift doors slides apart, and Marlana the starship tech pokes her head through, calling down for survivors. She hooks a safety line to an inside hook placed for that purpose, then lowers herself down the rungs of the shaft to assist them. With Miquiztli’s assistance, they manage to pull Dr. Faust from the lift before it compresses further and drops three more decks down with the remainder of its gory contents. Unable to support all three of them, however, Marlana gives Miquiztli assess to a maintenance crawlspace and takes the more injured of their group up to the waiting care of Dr. Bryan Johnson.

As the tech, the scientist, and the doctor make their way out of the corridor and back toward MedBay, Miquiztli finds a pocket of space in the crawl tunnel and catches her breath, taking it all in very, very slowly…

Sessions 000a-000b: Initial Jam Sessions & Chargen
Getting the ball rolling...

NOTE: The original intention was to spend a single session in idea-jamming and setting/character establishment, but it turned into two sessions as the player roster unexpectedly changed. Since our second meetup turned into more continued idea-jamming, I decided to include the details in this post so as to keep all the initial ideas collected in one post for future reference. Thus the information below has been modified to include the full range of development for both the 1-4 and the 1-18 game sessions combined.

We spent the first session hashing out the basic idea, and making the initial characters using the Alternity system. The follow-up session added Rachel to the roster (and goddamn is it great to have the old team back together!). I suspect the third session will bring in Melissa, as well.

Players Present: Nievita, Justin, Scott, Rachel (added 1-18), and Myself as GM.

Story Background

The basic premise of the story is that roughly 200 years (maybe a bit less) in the future, Earth was in very dire straits. “Rockstar Astrophysicist” Felix Faust discovered that a comet was on a multi-thousand-year-old collision course with the Earth, and would clearly destroy all life upon it, if not obliterate the planet entirely.

Several plans were then set into motion, one of which involved the creation of Ark Ships to attempt colonization of some of the closest star systems. In the past centuries, several systems with potential for habitation had been discovered, but no further leaps toward creation of light speed travel had been developed. Advances had pushed the thresholds significantly closer to noteworthy sublight speeds, but still the precious threshold of light speed was out of humanity’s grasp. As such, it would take many years for these arks to reach their destinations, with generations passing them back on Earth. However, relativistic speeds would show only a fraction of that time having passed on the ships themselves.

“Legacy Alpha” is one such ship, sent out into the stars to try and give humanity a new home. It’s mission is to transport something over two thousand cryo-frozen colonists to a distant star system, and use the resources on board the ship (including the very components of the Ark ship itself) to build a new colony, with more ships to follow and bring more survivors from home. Accompanying the voyage was none other than Felix Faust himself! Skeleton crews of starship technicians would cycle in and out on shifts, keeping the ship running while it rocketed toward its destination. Every ten years, the rest of the colonist “ice men” would be thawed in rotation, and given scans and tests by Medics, to ensure their safety.

Having finally reached the far edge of the system it was destined for, the Legacy Alpha slowed down to a system speed, and automatic routines awakened more of the management crew. As the communications came back online (having been powered down during the Drift), a number of cached messages finally came through, reporting hardships back home, growing concern about the comets, loss of communications with other Arks, and then one final, disturbing message: “You’re all that’s left of us. Good luck out there, and God bless.”

Our story begins as the ship’s many systems power up again, and the crew is left to ponder this message.

Character Creation

Three Four characters were created: The Physicist, The Doctor, The Agent, and The O’Brien.

Each character enters the story with a Major Personal Secret! At first we debated keeping them as actual player secrets, but we decided it would be more fun if we all knew as players, and thus could together help create situations where those secrets were tested and put on the line. We also used Scott’s “Back Story Cards” to randomly add some more events and back characters to the mix. The results were pretty good!

The characters thus far:

Justin as “Felix Faust”

Basics: A rock star astrophysicist that everyone loves. Think: Neil Degrasse Tyson, but I’m guessing German. He has a TV show that he broadcasts weekly throughout the ship, educating everyone on Science. And he even took part of some of the “Dream Entertainment” systems set up to keep the “ice men” from going mad during cryo sleep.

Faust’s Secret: The Felix Faust on the Legacy Alpha is in fact a clone! When the Arks were in the final stages of planning, the real Faust realized that the only person who could ensure their success was himself. It was his mission, his idea, and there was still so much more he didn’t have time to document for others to be able to carry on. But he also knew he was needed on earth to continue working on other plans to save the planet. Plus there was no way he could communicate with the ships once they had launched and spun up to full-Drift speeds.

So he somehow managed to clone himself! He sent a clone of himself on each of the Arks, whose occupants were told that a lottery had happened and they had won his presence. The cloning methods had unexpected results, however, with the clone on the Legacy Alpha gaining enhanced Intelligence and other boons, and a few drawbacks as well. He knows that he is a clone, but no one else does.

Faust’s Card Draws:

  • Miquiztli protected Felix from a suicide bomber in the last week, in a lift between levels. The last word the bomber spoke was “Disaster!” before exploding. Her psi shield prtected them both, but the bomber was obliterated.
  • He, Marlana, and the SECOND captain (heretofore unmentioned) joined together to handle a massive issue threatening everyone. Command + Theory + Execution! Marlana learned that Felix was a toxin-resistant mutant (poison clouds threatened the scrubbers), while she shared an intense emotional moment, bonding them as friends.

Scott as “Bryan Johnson”

Basics: A totally ordinary, nondescript, unremarkable fellow, aside from his amazing medical skills and top-notch intelligence.

Johnson’s Secret: He’s an android! A really advanced creation, perfectly human in appearance and interaction protocols. Much like the doctor in Alien, he is also reporting to some Unknown Shadow Entity that has of yet been designed. Mechanically, we just made it simple and used the Mechalus race instead of Human, as the Android Creation Rules are super complex.

Bryan’s Card Draws:

  • When the Church and Security came into conflict, Scott chose the Church, for contacts! He chose the Church, who wanted to hold services nearby, and security disagreed.
  • At the launch event, FELIX saw BRYAN JOHNSON talking with Senator Quimby, including personal physical contact! Faust vowed to observe and take note.
  • MARLANA suspects his shady past – she suspects him of being lecherous, because he spends a lot of time with certain female patients. The truth of this is that those particular patients are the only successful psi experiments from the cryo tanks!

Nievita as “Miquiztli”

Basics: A PSI/Div representative on the team, capable as a field agent in high-risk situations, and skilled in both weaponry and espionage.

  • Miquiztli avoids med bay ever since THE THIRD CAPTAIN was re-frozen post-arrest. She’s still in there, and Miquiztli can still hear her psychic slowed-down scream, even now, echoing throughout the med bay

Rachel as “Marlana Spencer”

Basics: “Miles O’Brien, but buff” was the basic character pitch. A grease-gear of high skill, Marlana joined the crew just barely in her twenties, and has aged to early thirties in the years of rotations since. She has something of a wicked temper and distrusts authority, but her “all for love” outlook makes her a passionate and dedicated member of a close team. She packs one hell of a right hook, too.

Her Secret: Marlana was selected by a skill-based lottery to be on this first ship, but it was a single ticket only. Her six-year-old son would have to be left behind! Unwilling to let this happen, she bribed ship security to get him a place onboard in the youth crew. She still owes security greatly for that, a debt that lingers with unspoken menace so far.

Due to the fact that adolescent youths and younger were not allowed to be cryo frozen, the youths that came on board were kept awake, educated by a ship teacher, and assigned to groups and tasks. After her son (Marlo) proved himself especially capable, he was assigned to special security duty, receiving more active shifts. Because of these events, Marlo is actually now a few years older than his mother!

  • During “THE THIRD CAPTAIN’s” breakdown, Marlana exposed her to her son! That captain was secretly experimented upon, the first latent psi captain, and she started going crazy! The doc BRYAN JOHNSON vehemently denied her insanity (as he was programmed to do), but Marlo (late teens at this point) told superiors, and that led to both the Captain getting Jail-Iced while Marlo got a commission to security.
  • She owes SHIP SECURITY because they smuggled her son on board at launch – he wasn’t initially registered!
  • Suspects Byran of being lecherous! Seems he spends MORE time with females -and in truth, that’s because ONLY women have been successful in psychic modification while sleeping. !!! And this is made even more intense, because her son is the ONLY natural psychic on the ship, AND a male!

What’s Next?

Melissa still needs to create a character. We could definitely use someone with leadership skills, to unify the team and provide direction.Maybe more combat skills could help, as right now we have two Mega-Geeks, a kinda-Geek boxer, and a Combat Psi. Also, only one character so far has Zero-G skills, which can be extremely handy with some of the challenges I plan to introduce.

Also? It could be fun for one or two o the characters to be religious or spiritual in some way. Not magically empowered, no, but an honest true believer in something spiritual. Religion vs Science can be a great conflict tool!
